Top Floral Attractions In Our Neck Of The Woods

Zeidler’s Flowers is taking a minute to give you yet another thing to put on your bucket list: visiting a floral attraction.

Yes, these exist, from elaborate flower shows to quirky flower festivals, stunning botanical gardens or big-deal blooming events across mountains and deserts. In the spring and summer, the whole of the U.S. experiences peak blooming for many of their signature flowers and plants. It makes sense that towns, cities and regions would want to celebrate their most beautiful assets in the form of flower events that showcase them. To wit: our own SWIMGA offers a bi-annual tour of about ten gardens. It’s a great way to explore our community’s flora and fauna, as well as an excuse to immerse yourself in the local culture of others. And that’s something we’ve made easy for you in our list below.

Honoring the Role of Women

women

In the early 1900’s. women in Eastern Europe and Soviet Bloc nations gathered together for the first time to discuss fighting for social justice for women. Just over a century later, women from nations from all across the globe are still raising the banner. The organizers of the 2017 International Women’s Day recognize that there is not a single organization, government. or coalition that can take on the issues of the world, but that as a team, in a collaborative effort, we can make a difference.  With events scheduled in nearly every U.S. State, Hong Kong, Brisbane, London and almost 100 nations, this is truly a global initiative whose time has come. While in some part of the world, the fight is for basic human rights, in the West the day has taken on a different scope – to remember and recognize the contributions of influential women in every sphere of society, from politics to medicine, from education to advocacy.

At Zeidler’s Flowers, we too salute the ladies, past and present, whose hearts, compassion and strength have changed the world.

women

It is not difficult to find women making an impact in Evansville – just look around! If you are seeking ways to honor the everyday heroes that may never be in a history book, but nonetheless are agents for change – here are a few ideas.

* Write quick emails to women in town who you admire for their character and accomplishments, and let them know that you think they are doing great work – whether you know them personally or not! If they are friends, consider a beautiful floral arrangement and a personal card.  Don’t forget the mom who is raising great kids or the teacher who has always inspired your child to do their best.

* Join a local organization dedicated to investing in the women of tomorrow – the local girl’s club, or an after-school job training program. Invest your time into a young life, and you will instill confidence, wisdom and imagination.

women* Donate to a charity that is assisting women in breaking the cycle of abuse or poverty. Give them a call and find out how you can tangibly help to change someone’s life.

Showing honor to those who are quietly making a positive impact is easy – it just requires a bit of time. Sending notes, helping out, and donating are all meaningful ways to do your part as well – but don’t forget the flowers. Even the strongest of women love to receive a gorgeous floral design from Zeidler’s Flowers.

“Share the Happy” Aims for Smiles

receiving flowers

Receiving flowers makes everyone’s day brighter – no matter the occasion, there is no denying that a bouquet of flowers in hand is a highlight for so many people. The team at Zeidler’s Flowers are continually privileged to be part of the excitement, smiles, tears, and thankfulness that go along with giving and receiving such a beautiful and meaningful gift. We started our “Share The Happy” initiative to help spread the joy that flowers and special gifts can bring. The goal of the program is to encourage others to share their story – and a photo – when they give and receive flowers.

Perfect Prom Flowers

shutterstock_50394988An evening filled with tradition and also considered a rite of passage by many, teenagers across the country anticipate and enjoy prom every year. Prom involves several traditions including formal gowns, tuxedos, limousines, and the prom march, but one of the most special prom customs happens before the dance even begins – the exchange of prom flowers like the corsage and boutonniere. Thought to have originated in France, where women often pinned flowers to their bodices for protection and good luck. The tradition took hold when it became customary for a young man to offer a young woman’s parents a bouquet of flowers. The gentleman would select one stem from the bouquet which his date would wear or carry during their evening together. At Zeidler’s Flowers, our professional florists look forward to helping you and your date participate in the time honored tradition of exchanging corsages and boutonnieres this prom night.

When ordering a corsage, the most important thing to remember is to select flower colors that will complement your date’s dress. Before ordering a corsage, ask your date what color she will be wearing and whether she prefers a pin-on corsage or a corsage on a wristlet. This will ensure her corsage looks great with her gown and that she feels comfortable wearing it all evening. Corsages are available in bright, dazzling colors and classic monotone white arrangements, featuring flowers like gerbera daisies, orchids, roses, lilies, and carnations. Embellishments like feathers, gems, ribbons, and lace can also be added for a girl who likes her flowers with personality.

It is customary for a young woman to give her prom date a boutonniere that matches her corsage to wear on his lapel. We have flowers coordinated to match and can sell in sets. Boutonnieres also vary in style from elegant designs to exciting miniature arrangements featuring fun embellishments. Take a cue from your date’s day to day style to decide what type of boutonniere he will prefer.

Pink the Rink and Zeidler’s Flowers

IMG_4100On January 31st, 2015 our local hockey team, the Evansville Icemen, hosted a fundraiser for our local chapter of the Susan G. Komen foundation.  It was a “sea of pink” that night at the Ford Center, from pink towels to pink cheerleading cones. We at Zeidler’s are proud to have donated pink carnations for them to sell and raise money for the cause as well.

IMG_4094 During the Icemen game Friday evening, the public was invited to donate $5 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They could then paint a loved one’s name who has been effected by Breast Cancer on the ice.  Those names remained in place for Saturday nights’ Pink the Rink game. The names were covered by a few thin layers of water in order to protect them throughout the duration of the game.

3 Tips For Picking Perfect Summer Picnic Flowers

Buying flowers on Valentine’s Day is easy — red roses. Buying flowers for other occasions? Not so easy when you start to realize how many different kinds of flowers there are and how many different ways they can be arranged. If you’re trying to figure out what flowers to give as a gift at a summer picnic and find yourself stumped, try these three tips to help you find the answer.

1. Consider the Message You Want to Send

Flowers have many different meanings. For example, roses are usually a symbol of love, carnations are symbols of pride and beauty, gardenias are connected with sweetness, and daisies stand for innocence. The meanings may also change with the color. A red rose is the time honored symbol of love while pink roses show admiration. White roses are reserved for marriages or other new beginnings, while yellow roses say just friends. If you decide the message you want to send, there’s probably a flower just for that. To make things even easier, you can often shop by occasion.

2. Think About How the Arrangement Will Fit Into Their Home

A common sight in hospitals are the giant get well soon bouquets. The same holds true at weddings and other events where public gift giving is common. Before you buy that giant arrangement for a summer picnic, think about if bigger really sends a stronger message. What do you expect a person to do with the arrangement? A small arrangement can easily fit on a kitchen counter, table, shelf, window sill, or desk and be remembered for a few weeks.

3. Consider Something Permanent Instead

If you really want to give a meaningful give, consider something a little more permanent. A green plant in a nice planter can brighten up a home for years to come and will also help improve the quality of the indoor air. If they don’t have the perfect place for it, they can easily bring it to work or give it to a friend, so it will never go to waste.

One Day Only

One Day Only

The words Daffodils and Wordsworth go hand in hand, as Wordsworth’s most famous poem about Daffodils was composed in 1804.  This was two years after he saw the beautiful flowers while walking by Ullswater on a stormy day with Dorothy, his Sister.

Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed–and gazed–but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
