Daisies are known for being cheerful and bright. They stand for innocence and purity and are the quintessential spring flower. Don’t Forget! When it comes to time to order April birthday bouquets for your loved ones, call Zeidler’s Flowers! We have both the iconic white and yellow English daisy, as well as the vivid colors of the gerbera daisy.
- There are over 23,000 varieties of daisy, but the most common are the English, the Gerbera, the Marguerite, and the Shasta types.
- Daisies are composite flowers, made up of smaller “florets”. Commonly known as the petals, ray florets surround the colorful center – which is also comprised of tiny, tubular flowers.
- The daisy was named after the Anglo-Saxon words meaning “day’s eye”. Most daisies close at night and open again when the morning sun appears.
- Daisies are related to the artichoke and are just as edible. Their leaves, stem, and flowers can be eaten and have a pleasant taste. They are also used for medicinal purposes, to heal wounds, ease stomach upset and alleviate coughing.
- Gerbera daisies are a favorite with florists, for their large and colorful heads. Gerberas grow in creams, yellows, oranges, reds, and pinks – they also have thick, sturdy stems and the ability to live for a long time after being cut for a bouquet.
- Gerberas do not close up at night as many daisies.
