When we were kids, Halloween was quite the exciting time. The costumes, the fun with friends, the candy – we looked forward to this night all year long. Maybe now that we are adults, the celebration has changed a bit. But we still can agree that we love decorating, having parties and enjoying the evening with family and friends. Carved in Tradition: Pumpkin carving was a custom for centuries before it was associated with the Halloween holiday. The exact date we combined the jack o’lantern with October 31 is lost in history, but it is clear that the pumpkin is an iconic symbol of the autumn harvest and festivals. Hundreds of years ago, carved pumpkin lanterns were used by night watchmen to light their way, and legends tell us that the name jack o’lantern was first attached to the person holding the candle. At some point the pumpkin lantern itself assumed the title – and it is now an established piece of Halloween tradition.

Trick or Treat!  – Centuries ago, “souling” was the practice of the poor going from door to door asking for food and alms. In the 1930’s, trick-or-treating became a custom that mimicked this activity. It was considered to be a more appropriate way to celebrate than the more prevalent “trickery” of the day.
