History of Father’s Day

father's dayCelebrated annually in the U.S. on the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day is often thought of by retailers as a “second Christmas for fathers.” The holiday was not created as a consumer event only. However – the day is observed in many ways in over 142 nations globally.

The origin of the day for dads has a bit of a murky history. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908, and just a couple of months later, Grace Clayton sponsored an initiative to establish a matching holiday for fathers. In 1912, Methodist pastor J. Berringer was instrumental in creating a celebration in Vancouver, Washington, and although he claimed, he was the “first” to do so, in 1915 Harry Meek, a member of the International Lion’s Club, claimed that Fathers Day was his original idea. Regardless of who gets the credit, it wasn’t until 1966 when President Johnson signed a national declaration; and 1972 when President Nixon finally made it a national holiday.
